The Lakota are a Native American people. Also known as the Teton Sioux,they are one of the three prominent subcultures of the Sioux people. Their current lands are in North and South Dakota. They speak Lakȟótiyapi—the Lakota language,the westernmost of three closely related languages that belong to the Siouan language family.

Cecilia Fire Thunder is a nurse,community health planner and tribal leader of the Oglala Sioux. On November 2,2004,she was the first woman elected as president of the Tribe. She served until being impeached on June 29,2006,several months short of the two-year term. The major controversy was over her effort to build a Planned Parenthood clinic on the reservation after the South Dakota legislature banned most abortions throughout the state. The tribal council impeached her for proceeding without gaining their consensus.

The Republic of Lakotah or Lakotah is a proposed independent republic in North America for the Lakota people. Proposed in 2007 by activist Russell Means,the suggested territory would be enclaved by the borders of the United States,covering thousands of square miles in North Dakota,South Dakota,Nebraska,Wyoming,and Montana. The proposed borders are those of the 1851 Treaty of Fort Laramie between the United States government and the Lakota. These lands are now occupied by Indian reservations and non-Native settlements. None of the existing Lakota tribal governments support the proposed republic,and they were not consulted about the proposal.
Theresa B. "Huck" Two Bulls was an attorney,prosecutor and politician in the United States and the Oglala Sioux Tribe. In 2004 she was elected as Democratic member of the South Dakota Senate,representing the 27th district,the first American Indian woman to be elected to the state legislature. She served until 2008. That year Two Bulls was elected as president of the Oglala Sioux Tribe of the Pine Ridge Reservation,the second woman to serve in this position. She served one term,which was two years.
The Black Hills land claim is an ongoing land dispute between Native Americans from the Sioux Nation and the United States government over the Black Hills mountain range in the US states of South Dakota and Wyoming. The land in question was pledged to the Sioux Nation in the Fort Laramie Treaty of April 29,1868,but a few years later illegally seized and the treaty nullified in the Indian Appropriations Bill of 1876 without the tribe's consent. That bill "denied the Sioux all further appropriation and treaty-guaranteed annuities" until they gave up the Black Hills. A Supreme Court case was ruled in favor of the Sioux in 1980. The Sioux have outstanding issues with the ruling and have not collected the funds. As of 2011,the award was worth over $1 billion.
LaDonna Tamakawastewin Brave Bull Allard was a Native American Dakota and Lakota historian,genealogist,and a matriarch of the water protector movement. In April 2016,she was one of the founders of the resistance camps of the Dakota Access Pipeline protests,aimed at halting the Dakota Access Pipeline near the Standing Rock Indian Reservation in North Dakota.
The Wounded Knee 4-Directions Toby Eagle Bull Memorial Skatepark,also known as the Toby Eagle Bull Memorial Wounded Knee Four Directions Skate Park &the WK4-Directions TEB Memorial Skatepark,is a concrete skatepark located in Pine Ridge,South Dakota,United States,on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Completed in 2011 by the local community with help from skateboarding organizations,the skatepark features a spectrum of skate obstacles and is dedicated to a young Lakota skater who died in a car accident:Toby Eagle Bull. The WK4D TOB Memorial Skatepark is located in the Youth Opportunity,or "YO," park,adjacent to the Oglala Lakota Nation powwow grounds,a picnic area,a playground,a basketball court as well as a baseball field.
